I looked at the theme of insomnia for the expressive unit in my Advanced Higher Art course which, I did in my sixth year at high school.
My teacher, Mr Daly, basically taught me to paint that year! I looked very closely at the work of Tai Shan Schierenberg, Jenny Saville and Lucian Freud. Copying their paintings, brush strokes and palettes helped me immensely and I was soon confident enough to do portraits of my own.
I used acrylic paint, oil pastel and charcoal as my main mediums throughout the folio. My copy of Stare (first below) is my favorite, it was the first time I painted on such a large scale (it is A1). The portrait of Tai Shan Schierenbergs Henry, second below, was featured in the 2009 Renfrewshire Council Calendar.
